In 1976, Even Walther Grüner started Street Church in Germany. Ever since, Even has put up tents in more than 250 cities in Central Europe and has contributed to the planting of about 50 new churches in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The Founder says, “It’s with pain that we see many churches around that just live for themselves. Everything is good, but outside the church premises there are several people who haven’t received Jesus. Efforts that have contributed to the planting of the 50 churches have been inspired by the vision of reaching the whole city with the gospel. We have made sure that the DNA has not been replaced with other values, but that the need for the city is still alive. The path to revival, growth and breakthrough is distress for the souls.” (Founder report, 2014)
Street Church concept was brought to Norway by Ole Bjørn Saltnes, the leader of Misjon Europa and coordinator for Street Church work in Norway. The concept has spread from him, and several churches are now buying tents in order to do like Jesus did: meeting people where they are in their busy daily life. Jesus went always out to people. He didn’t sit still in a house on synagogue and wait for people to come to him. When people don’t come to church, the church needs to go to them. We want that those we get in touch with will meet Jesus.
Every first Saturday of the month we are in Ås central from 12:00 – 15:00 to share the gospel with people. We give out free bibles and other Christian literature with those that are interested. Whenever possible, we also serve waffles or hot dogs and coffee. We wish to have conversations about Jesus with as many people as possible. We meet people with respect, listen to the questions they might have and make time for conversations around these questions.
